So, since I just started reading about deadpool I wanted to ask you if you could recommend me some comics? Oh, and sorry about my english </3

No need to apologize.

The Deadpool title rebooted at the end of last year under Marvel Now. The old ones were by Daniel Way but look for the Deadpool comics written by Posehn/Duggan under the same title. It’s only on issue #9! Easy to catch up.

If you’re looking for other things besides that check out my recs tag.

CALM YOURSELF, GRASSHOPPER.

I go to Alien Worlds. I use to be really big on Heroes and Fantasies but I don’t think we have those anymore, questionmark…

They have a subscription system in place so you can get a box and a number and tell them what you want and this way if you can’t make it every Wednesday (when new comics come out) or have to come later in the day and have something a lot of people are reading (like all the Marvel Nows will probably be) they’ll order one for you ahead of time and pull it aside so it’ll sit there and wait for you, longest run on ever.

It’s free and awesome. It’s the only way I get several of my comics because some of these titles people pull off the table so fast.

Sign up for “Point One” and “Young Avengers”. Young Avengers doesn’t start until January but Point One is a thing Marvel does with a bunch of small stories to introduce all the new titles coming up. Unfortunately this is twice the price of a regular comic and unfortunately I can’t tell you how much Young Avengers stuff it’s going to have in the first one… but hey, Chavez is on the cover? That comes out tomorrow, so call or swing by tomorrow for sure because it probably won’t last in the store for more than two days…

LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE MORE QUESTIONS, EXCLAMATION POINT

Anonymous said: The Avengers has made me want to read comics, but I don't really know where to start, I read Civil War 'cause people were going on about it on my dash but could you recommend what I could start with?

Firstly it drives me crazy that everyone thinks they have to run to Civil War if you’re a Marvel Cinematic Universe fan. Why must you all torture yourselves like this??

Secondly… Just so everyone knows… I have this fancy little tag right here for this kind of thing, so please skip around and I hope you find it useful.

To add though… This coming month there are some new titles being launched. I highly recommend finding out if your local comic shop has ‘subscription boxes’. This is the only way I get my Ultimate Spider-Man and Avenging Spider-Man comics every week or else they’d sell out before I can add up my server tips. If they do you want to let them know all the Marvel Now titles you are interested in because I predict these are gonna fly off shelves at the start.

New titles MCU fans should check out, releasing with issue #1 in October and November…

  • Iron Man
  • Thor: God of Thunder
  • Captain America
  • Indestructible Hulk (IF! You like HULK (and don’t just want Bruce Banner), because I don’t think this is going to be like the new Hawkeye series which has a lot of Clint Barton in it.)

Oh also, yes, the new Hawkeye comic is fantastic. Issue #3 is coming out soon, so that’s easy to catch up on.

But anyroad, point is this is a very good time for MCU fans to jump into the comic-verse and get in on the action.

futilejubilee said: Hey, if you had to pick a running series to start reading comics on, what would you choose? I really want to start reading and you're by far the most informed person I follow, but I don't exactly have the money to be buying like five series a month, so I'm hoping to start with just one. I'd be especially interested in stuff with strong female characters that get to wear pants.

Aw, well thanks for thinking of me, and caring about my opinion.

For you I’d suggest Captain Marvel staring Carol Danvers. #4 came out today! So yeah, you can catch up no problem. I’m not reading it but my current subscriptions are male heavy and/or 15-60 issues in. But you’d probably love it! Easy to jump into even if you have no Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) knowledge or Carol Danvers knowledge. There’s also been great crossover character interaction including Captain America and Spider-Man. Like I said, not reading it yet, but always hearing great things and I myself plan to try and catch up soon.

Anonymous said: So, I have a question about comics (Sorry but you seem to be the more knowing comic book fan I know and I don't even know you!) Sorry if this bothers you, but I'm trying to get into the Marvel universe (I'm not into comics) And personally, I started with the Young Avengers and it was awesome. Where does someone go from there? What other good comic books are there?

Hellooooo. This is not a bother at all because I will jump at any opportunity to talk about comics. And thanks for thinking of me. That’s pretty cool of you.

I’m glad you enjoyed Young Avengers!

So it really depends on what you like but if Young Avengers is all you’ve read that’s kind of limiting to what I can recommend for you without knowing more about what you’d be into reading.

I would definitely say Avengers Academy. I like the characters and the characters I don’t like I enjoy not liking, if that makes sense. Even if you’re not familiar with Henry Pym, Tigra, Quicksilver, Justice and Speedball who are already established characters along with mentioning of others I think the series does a really good job of explaining what you need to know quickly and you can fill in the blanks. It’s the kiddos that are great and fun to root for (or not root for). I think as of Wednesday we’re on part …threeee? of a really big story line that’s going to kick off something real exciting so hurry and catch up! (If you go off anon I’ll help you do that.)

In October there’s going to be some new awesomely awesome Marvel Now! lines coming out. Just to name a few that I’m signed up for (excluding the ones you wouldn’t be interested in or couldn’t jump into blindly) Ultimate Comics: Iron Man and Indestructible Hulk. Totally excited. Also Uncanny Avengers, since you like team stuff, yeah? Scarlett Witch and Wolverine? Eh? Eh? Excited.

Otherwise for other things involving younger characters there’s a new comic coming out in October called Freelancers (Boom comics). The summary sounds awesome: Two woman who grew up in a martial arts orphanage are trying to make it in LA. They have guns on the cover. The writer is from Darkwing Duck. Dude!

If you want to read something that’s already out there that you would have to catch up on some of my favorites right now that you could jump into… Avenging Spider-Man, Daredevil, the new Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Force, Blue Beetle. All of those are 30 issues or under right now I think, and they’re all pretty newbie friendly. Uncanny X-Force is an alternative co-existing universe X-Men story relaunch. If you’ve seen the movies and understand how mutants are and get that Prof X is a bad ass and everything you’ll be able to follow along just fine.

If this wasn’t helpful let me know what comic universe movies you like or what other types of genres you enjoy and we can go from there.

EDIT: There’s also a ‘recs’ link on my sidebar if you wanna lookit that.

bemyselfloudly:

I know she has had at least a few appearances before she was in Nomad, and then took up the Spidergirl identity, but it’s ridiculously hard to find information on important appearances even for characters that are much better known than Anya.  Anyone who knows where I can read more of her outside of Nomad, Young Allies, Spider-Girl, and Onslaught Unleashed, PLEASE hit up my ask box!  I’ll be forever grateful!

Reblogging so I can put this under my comic recs, if you don’t mind!

Does it go without saying that you’ve read all the Arana books? This is probably a dumb question but you didn’t list it so I wanted to be sure! That’s her origin story. There are three volumes.

Otherwise…

She appears in The Amazing Spider-Man 635-637 which is the last three parts of a four part story called Grim Hunt. If you like it she has an even bigger part in a What If issue of Spider-Man. Please don’t look this up until you’ve read Grim Hunt, unless you don’t mind spoilers- because it’s basically a comic about what if the Grim Hunt story from Amazing Spider-Man had ended differently.

For the story Spider-Island she got her own three issues called Spider-Island: The Amazing Spider-Girl. If you want to read the story this is tied in from that’s The Amazing Spider-Man issues 666-673, but Anya is only in the first three, appearing with the Young Allies.

Do you read Avengers Academy? She joins the team in issues 21-23. I’m reading this series now and I love it and recommend it to everybody. She’s in issue 13 as well so maybe consider investing in the first volume? She’s also in an 80 page book called “Avengers Academy Giant-Size #1”.

She’s seriously awesome in the Ms Marvel comics. She’s in volume 2, issues 6-8, 11-14, 18-24.

Personally I hate Earth-982. I just do. If any of you can tell me one good thing that came from Earth-982 I will bake you a cake. So stay away from volume 2 of The Web of Spider-Man which involves Kaine and no one needs that. And also The Amazing Spider-Girl which May and April Parker and omg I hate them sooo muuuuuuuuuuch. Anya is a villain in those. Yeah I know. Dumb.

If you want to see Anya die (NOT Earth-616, breathe easy…) she’s in Marvel Team-Up vol 2 issue 16.

rosemcphee said: Hi! All your Red Team posts have got me really interested in that group and I was wondering what your comic recs would be for them? I'm fairly new to comics, I've only read Civil War. Thanks!

ONLY READ CIVIL WAR?!?!?! Why would you torture yourself like that? Oh man.

Or I don’t know, maybe it’s better that way. I’m sure it was still emotional but not like… followed these characters for a decade and my life is being ripped apart at the seams emotional. -pats you on the back-

I have recommendations for all three characters separately here.

As for the three of them together? It’s unfortunately not as common as I would like.

I’m not a big fan of Carlo Barberi’s design of the characters, but the only time I’ve seen all three together was in Suicide Kings. They’re really amusing together and the Punisher is with them too. But when it’s just the three of them they’re banter and differences are highly amusing.

Suicide Kings is decent. It either gets a lot of praise or a lot of nays. (I say weird things.) I think it’s a fine series to get into IF you already know Deadpool. If not I honestly would push you towards reading his other things that have better writing and good arcs as opposed to jumping into a smaller series that’s so off beat for him.

To my knowledge that’s the only team up of all three together. The only other thing I could find was this.

Yay Marvel Red Team!

Anonymous said: Hello there lovely person with a lovely blog. I hate to bother you about this, but because of you I'm actually /really/ curious about comics now. May I ask you something? Where should someone start if they wanted to read Anya comics (I think that's what you said was the name of the red head in your background) or Daredevil comics? Thanks in advance :)

Turning people onto comics has brought me so much joy in the past few weeks. And what’s even more exciting is people getting interested in Anya.

This might be confusing if you’ve already googled around or will in the future- but I do not recommend picking up Anya’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy Vol 2. Instead go straight to her series Arana. All 12 comics are sold in Heart of the Spider vol 1. It’d probably be easier to find the trade than each individual issue at your local store… or you might just have to order that too, but if you’re brave enough to get them all at once it’d be easier and cheaper. The first one is cute but the story gets good around issue 3.

Almost forgot about Matt!

The Man Without Fear. Is so. Freakin. Good. I have yet to get all the way through it to be honest, but it’s a book I’ve been meaning to find and own. The Man Without Fear is an origin story, and not the first for Matt Murdock, but it’s praised as the best. Now that you’ve got me thinking about it again and I’m just itching to get my hands on it. If you’d like to go on from there I can recommend two options for you. I try not to give people a list longer than 3 volumes of anything because I don’t want you to feel like you have to commit to spending all that money… The first option would be if you really want to just go to one other story arc, Kevin Smith (love him) did a series called Guardian Devil that’s eight issues long. The antichrist is involved, Spider-Man pops in at one point, and you’ve got both Bullseye and Kingpin breathing down Matt’s neck. So if that interests you and you’re a fan of Kevin Smith’s writing and direction then grab it when you’re done with TMWoF. If for whatever reason you are a View Askew hater then instead you could look for Daredevil Visionaries Vol 1 made by Frank Miller who also did TMWoF. So if you really loved the origin that would be a safe bet. There are 3 volumes total but go as far as you want. They’re all good, so I hear.

ratedgrandr said: Hey gazzy It's me again! Ok, so I don't actually read comics, and I am slightly ashamed of this. But! I really, really wanna get into the comic-verse! So I was wondering where you would advise starting? I just know there are so many different series and what not! I really wanna read Avengers and Spidey stuff, but your suggestions are highly appreciated! Also if you know of anywhere I could download pdfs, that'd be helpful! Thanks in advance!

Oh hey you.

I tried to look at my archive and find my other recommendation asks but could only find this one for Spider-Man. Go check thatt out, and I’ll write you something else up for Avengers below.

And after this I’m going to go add ‘I want to start reading comics’ into my links on the sidebar since this has become reoccurring . So I hope you don’t mind me publish this! Thanks.

SO AVENGERS!

Like with Spider-Man I’m going to direct you to The Ultimates. This is because you’re a movie-verse fan and you’re not likely to take well to the oldies. But you’ll love the Ultimate universe, guaranteed. So I’m trying to save you money. Now, the Ultimate universe has many subsub launches within itself and that can make things confusing. Your going to see other titles with Ultimate in them but you’re looking for plain and simply ‘The Ultimates’. I’ve read volumes 1 and 2 and I skipped in to Civil War from there. …Because volume 3 sucks. Don’t touch it. I’d also recommend checking out The New Avengers after that. At least the first volume. I wish that I had read more of it than I actually have.

So then get on Civil War and let the feelings begin. …and never stop.

A little extra- And this is to anyone who wants to look into this plot since Thanos is likely right around the corner…

Look into getting The Infinity Gauntlet. Power gems, courting Death… Important stuff.

Hoooooope this helped you a little. And didn’t just confuse you more.

coachellous said: I'm such a noob to superheroes, but I love all the movies. How do I start reading comics? Like can you read them online or do you have to buy them? And there's like a million different series (they're probably not called series are they...) for each character so how do you know which one to start reading? Idk I just really want to read Spider-Man comics but I don't know how :(

Hey there! Hahaha you’re being so careful with your phrasing. Don’t sweat it! Just so you know I post these kinds of questions publicly so to answer other people’s questions and to let others jump in if they have something to add.

I understand your frustration because these guys have been around FOREVER. So there’s way too much to start reading now, decades later. What makes it harder is that Marvel likes to make a thousand different Earths and universes and I mean it’s worse than Batman movie reboots. Gasp, I know right.

To start I’m not now or ever going to directly link anyone to any downloads, which I’ve told people before privately. I work hard for my money and it sucks when I have to go drop $30 in one day just to by one trade book but I choice if it’s worth it or not. I might reblog downloads but otherwise I’m not going to go looking for anyone or tell anyone how to find them. This isn’t suppose to sound preachy, but it probably does. Just telling everyone- GO BUY COMICS.

So you’re interested in Spider-Man? Good choice. There is a new Spider-Man out right now that is a fantastic series. (yes series.) But do really feel like you have to know Parker to appreciate Morales. So don’t touch the New Ultimate Spider-Man just yet. That’s the black suit with the red stripes. If you see it don’t touch it. Be patient :]

I’m going to assume that it’s the modern stuff that turned you onto Spider-Man to begin with so I’m gonna bet you’ll enjoy Ultimate Spider-Man. You can pick up the first volume probably at any Barnes & Noble, or call and they’ll order it. If you want to look online to buy a few at a time for a deal feel free to google and search around.

So yeah, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. If you like it, keep buying the trade books (the volume graphic novels that contain many issues in one book.) and then you can move on to other story arcs if you get far enough like Fallout. And /THEN/ definitely check out the New Ultimate Spider-Man.

Hope that wasn’t confusing.
